Public transport in Athens and your pass
The plain fact first: no Athens pass includes metro, tram or bus as standard. Here is what you need instead and where an add-on helps.

The network: metro, tram, bus and one exception
Athens runs three metro lines, a tram to the coast and a dense bus network under the joint operator OASA. One ticket type covers all of them, from a 90-minute ticket to day and multi-day tickets, sold at station machines and as a rechargeable card. The single exception is the airport: metro line 3 to the airport and the X95 express bus carry their own fares, and no day ticket and no pass add-on includes them.
What the passes do about it
None of the four Athens passes includes public transport as standard. The Athens City Pass sells a transport ticket as an add-on, for one day or for five days, valid on metro, tram, suburban rail and city buses within the fare zone and again excluding the airport; the add-on price appears in its booking step. The MegaPass includes a 24-hour ticket in its Explorer tier only. The Flex Pass and the Athens Pass have no transport option at all.
The hop-on hop-off bus is not the metro
Three of the passes include a hop-on hop-off bus for two days: the City Pass for 48 hours, the Athens Pass and the MegaPass for two days; in the Flex Pass it is one of the picks. The bus is useful on a sightseeing day, with loops to the Acropolis, the museums, Piraeus and the Glyfada coast, but it stops in the evening and does not serve most hotel streets. For the trip from the airport, the ride to the port for a ferry or an evening in Plaka you still need the OASA ticket.
Walking is often quicker
The centre is compact. From Syntagma to the Acropolis entrance it is a 20-minute walk, from Monastiraki to the Ancient Agora five minutes. Many visitors use the metro only for the airport, Piraeus and the trip back to the hotel, which is why a 90-minute ticket or a day ticket bought as needed usually costs less than a multi-day ticket.

Is the metro included in any Athens pass?+
Does the add-on cover the airport metro?+
No. The airport line and the X95 express bus have their own fares and are excluded from every day ticket, with or without a pass. Buy the airport ticket separately at the station.
Is the hop-on hop-off bus a substitute?+
Partly. It links the sights on fixed loops and is included in three passes, but it does not run at night and does not replace the metro for your hotel or the port.
